Essential Functions
- Oversees daily operations of the department to assure timely accurate and cost effective medication distribution throughout the institution.
- Assures that drug usage throughout the hospital is in accordance with Federal and State regulations.
- Provides orientation and training for new employees.
- Provides orientation and training to new employees and ongoing annual competency assessment for compliance with USP 797.
- Assists in developing and updating policies and procedures to maintain compliance with Federal and State Regulations, JCAHO standards and ISMP recommendations.
- Supervises the distribution of medications by the Pharmacy Technicians to ensure medications are delivered to the patient care area staff at the scheduled times of administration.
- Develops and oversees inventory management procedures to maintain compliance with 340 B Federal Discount Drug Program.
- Develops and implements systems to minimizes drug expenditures through inventory management procedures.
- Assists in the implementation of new technologies and systems to improve the drug distribution process.
- Communicates procedural changes to staff and other departments as applicable.
- Collects data for DUR and ADR programs.
- Enters medication orders correctly into patient profiles in compliance with hospital formulary.
- Monitors patient medication orders for correctness of therapy, while considering allergies, dose, concurrent medications, interactions and diagnosis.
- Identifies variations from expected findings and understands the significance for such variations.
- Takes appropriate actions when variations are identified.
Coordinates care with other healthcare providers.
When appropriate, delegates to other healthcare providers.
Assesses and reassesses the patient’s condition, status and progress.
Prioritizes, reprioritizes, and modifies the plan of care based upon patient assessment and patient condition.
- Documents the implementation of the plan of care and any adverse and/or unexpected events or outcomes.
