Job Summary:

 

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, and the Vice President of Operation the Director of Pharmacy is
responsible for the development, communication, and implementation of the pharmacy mission, vision,
and goals. This individual is tasked with establishing a high functioning pharmacy operation for Heywood
and Athol Hospital. This individual will partner with other healthcare providers and departments
working closely with senior leadership to strategically plan, organize, and direct pharmacy operations to
support high quality patient experience. Provides leadership for clinical pharmacy programs and
activities across the system that include, but are not limited to, inpatient and outpatient drug
distribution, medication use quality and safety, regulatory compliance, drug procurement, and financial
performance. Executes on policy and formulary decisions in collaboration with the CMO. Develops
systems and services which ensure optimal therapeutic drug utilization for all patients. Collaborates with
340B Program Director to establish and execute the strategy for Heywood Healthcare’s 340B savings
and revenue generation. Anticipates and creates plans to manage new drug costs and supply chain
related shortages, incorporating new technologies that enhance operational performance.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Provides coaching and education for staff so that they can meet/exceed performance expectations.
  • Designs and implements individual and group plans which develop and motivate employees.
  • Ensures that employee skills match job requirements.
  • Completes all employee performance evaluations by evaluation due dates.
  • Oversees daily operations to meet vision of providing service to the community.
  • Improves patient and/or customer satisfaction.
  • Responds to customer requests and concerns in a timely and effective manner.
  • Meets/exceeds customer expectations so that the customers select and recommend Heywood Hospital as their primary source of healthcare.
  • Utilizes customer satisfaction data to develop and anticipate customer service systems.
  • Staffing patterns and work flow design match customer requirements.
  • Manages resources to ensure adequate resources and future growth.
  • Justifies budget variances.
  • Reduces costs and/or increases revenues.
  • In conjunction with the 340B Program Director, ensures that all savings and revenue goals of the 340B program are met. Continuously reviews the 340B landscape for growth opportunities and reports on any regulatory trends that may affect (positively or negatively) savings and/or revenue.

  • Collaborates/coordinates projects/activities with other departments, teams, and task forces to build a team approach to healthcare delivery.
  • Participates on task forces, PI teams, committees, etc.
  • Leads task forces, PI teams, committees, etc.
  • Monitors departmental contacts with outside service companies, suppliers, and/or professional services to assure that the contract is current and terms of the contract are adhered to by all parties.
  • Negotiates contracts and/or participates in user meetings.
  • Monitors contracts to ensure that contracts are utilized.
  • Assures that all medication use throughout the hospital meets all applicable standards, rules and regulations.
  • Assures that drug usage throughout the hospital is in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations, and hospital formulary and established policies and procedures of Heywood Hospital are followed
  • Assures that adequate mechanisms are in place for checks and balances for controlled substances.
  • Makes recommendations regarding optional use of formulary.
  • Seeks out requests from medical staff regarding changes to formulary.
  • Evaluates requests from medical staff and recommends changes to Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Implements recommendations of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Works with Pharmacy Staff and other departments to develop systems.
  • Educates Pharmacy Staff and other departments of the changes.
  • Ensures safe, economically effective use of medication throughout Heywood Hospital.
  • Participates and actively supports Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Makes recommendations to Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Responsible for assessing staff performance with hand hygiene compliance and participating in compliance rounds as requested by Infection Prevention Director.  Provide remediation or progressive discipline to employees as indicated.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

Minimum Education

  • B.S. degree in Pharmacy. 

Minimum Work Experience

  • Two years full-time acute care hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Minimum two years hospital Pharmacy Management experience required.

Required Licenses 

  • Current MA Licensed Pharmacist. 

Required Skills

  • Adequate knowledge of all applicable MDPH and DEA rules and regulations for hospital pharmacies.
