Job Summary:

 

The OB Tech will report to the Director of Maternal Child Health and will perform a wide variety of clerical and nursing aide duties. He/she will assist with phones, data collection, copying and faxing, and completing birth certificates. Other responsibilities include supply ordering and other tasks as assigned by the Director. Performing delegated nursing duties, environmental service duties and food service duties to enhance the satisfaction level of the hospitalized patient. Responsible for assuring all duties completed in a timely fashion and performed accurately, and presented in a professional manner.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Provides clerical support to clinical staff (e.g. maintains unit files, copies records when needed, assists with preparation of admission charts)
  • Under direction of the nurse, assists with arrangements for outside services such as ambulance services in a timely manner.
  • Appropriately prioritizes tasks and patient care adjusting to the changing workload as necessary (e.g. seeks assistance as needed from other staff, recognizes emergency situations etc.)
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment (identifies and/or removes safety hazards).
  • Performs support functions for manager/director as needed
  • Distributes parent worksheets and assists with completion of hospital work sheets for Birth Certificate process.
  • Assists with electronic Birth Certificate process when medical records is unable to perform.
  • Functions as Notary Public as needed.
  • Coordinates weekly delivery of birth certificate to Gardner City Hall.
  • Maintains accurate statistics of data for monthly reports.
  • Audits records for appropriate charges and makes corrections as needed.
  • Orders supplies and resisters patients for childbirth classes
  • Responds to patient call lights and assists patient with activities of daily care (e.g. personal hygiene, toileting, nutrition, ambulation etc).
  • Takes newborn pictures, escorts discharged patients out of the hospital.
  • Provides patient care based on standards of care, standard of practice, protocols and established policies and procedures under the direction of a licensed nurse.
  • Provides thorough, timely and accurate documentation of vital signs.
  • Provides timely and thorough information on patients to supervising licensed nurse and other health care team members.
  • Participates in learning for colleagues and self (attends educational programs, in-services, completes competencies
  • Assists with answering and transferring phone call and with responding to requests from visitors for access to the unit. Ensures that appropriate screening is done when allowing visitors onto the unit.
  • Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, assists with care of mother and her newborn, breastfeeding, post-operative care, and toileting needs.
  • Restocks rooms, including C-section room as needed
  • Re-orders stock based on needs of the unit

Frequently kneels (bending the legs at knee to come to rest on knee or knees), reaches (extending hands and arms in any direction), and feels (perceiving attributes of items as size, shape, temperature, or texture by means of fingertips). Occasionally crouches (bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine), and stoops (bending the body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist).

Qualifications

Job Requirements

Minimum Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required 

Minimum Work Experience

  • Maternity experience preferred
  • Experience with medical terminology preferred

Minimum Licenses and Certifications

  • Current CNA; or, 
  • MA certification; or,
  • High school diploma and a minimum of 75 hours in an accredited nursing program to include completion of first rotation; or,
  • active EMT or Paramedic Certification or active Patient Care Technician/Assistant Certification or active Home Health Aide Certification;
  • Current AHA CPR certification required

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication skills required 
  • Excellent word processing skills and computer skills required
