Job Summary:

Under the direction of management, a provider (Physician or APP), and/or nursing lead (if

applicable), the incumbent is primarily responsible for serving as a clinical float nurse across

multiple Heywood Medical Group ambulatory care locations. This includes supporting both

primary care and specialty practices by providing direct patient care, triage, care

coordination, and clerical support. The nurse will also serve as a backup resource for

pharmaceutical cardiac stress testing, assisting when primary cardiac staff are unavailable or

as volume requires. Flexibility, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to work independently

are essential to this dynamic role.

 Essential Clinical Functions (General):

  • Float to assigned Heywood Medical Group practices as needed.
  • Room patients, document history, records vital signs, and complete intake assessments
  • Perform telephone triage and provide telephonic education and care coordination
  • Assist providers with examinations and procedures.
  • Administer medications and perform phlebotomy and vaccinations.
  • Educate patients on chronic conditions, medications, and equipment (e.g., insulin, splints).
  • Interpret and relay normal and abnormal lab results to patients
  • Manage and complete tasks in clinical inboxes and practice communication buckets.
  • Queue prescriptions, orders, and referrals per provider direction and protocol.
  • Coordinate patient flow, prepare exam rooms, and maintain a clean clinical environment
  • Obtain prior authorizations for medications, diagnostics, and procedures.
  • Utilize MassPat/Prescription Monitoring Program and manage controlled substance logs
  • Mentor and support Medical Assistants and other clinical staff.
  • Process incoming/outgoing medical records and assist with clerical duties (calls, scheduling, etc.)
  • Maintain and restock clinical supplies, sterilize instruments, and ensure infection control compliance.
  • Attend team huddles and staff meetings to support communications and workflow.
  • Adhere to HIPPA, organizational, and departmental policies and safety standards.

 Cardiac Stress Test Support (Back-Up Function):

  • Serve as backup nurse for cardiac pharmaceutical stress testing as needed
  • Prepare patients and explain the procedure, risks, and post-test care.
  • Insert and manage IVs; administer pharmacologic stress test agents (e.g., Lexiscan, Dobutamine).
  • Monitor EKG, telemetry, and vital signs throughout the procedure.
  • Respond to adverse reactions using ACLS protocols and terminate tests when necessary.
  • Document patient response and outcomes accurately.
  • Follow all facility cardiac protocols, working closely with nuclear medicine, and provider teams

Essential Functions

  • Clinical duties include: patient care, telephone triage, patient education, obtaining and recording patient health information including vitals and injections
  • Communicate normal and abnormal lab results with patients and communicate clinical plan and significance
  • Completes tasks associated with clinical inbox/ practice buckets (personal, practice referral, medical record and others assigned) proficiently and in a timely manner
  • Queues orders and prescriptions as directed and according to practice procedure
  • Utilizes MassPat/Prescription Monitoring program as directed and according to practice procedure
  • Competently manages provider controlled substance registry program as directed and according to practice procedure
  • Prepare forms and educational materials as directed by Provider to be communicated to and/or mailed to patients
  • Provide mentoring to other clinical staff (such as Medical Assistants)
  • Rooming patients and begin basic documentation for medical provider: Performs Phlebotomy services and administers vaccines
  • Performs basic office laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, urine culture, hematocrit, sed rate, mono spot, pregnancy tests, throat cultures and related procedures
  • Coordinates patient flow and prepares patient for examination.  Takes and records vital signs and EKG’s.  Documents intake assessment.  Assists physician and others in clinical procedures as required or directed
  • Manage State Vaccine program under the direction of the Nurse Manager.
  • Obtains necessary prior- authorizations for ordered medications, procedures and diagnostic studies as required or directed
  • Maintains records, reports, logs and other statistical information as required or directed.

 

Qualifications

Job Requirements
 
Minimum Licenses and Certifications
  • Current Massachusetts RN or LPN license required
  • Current AHA BLS certification required
  • Current ACLS certification required

Minimum Experience

 

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a medical office or ambulatory care setting
  • At least one (1) year of telemetry experience and EKG interpretation required

Minimum Skills

  • Excellent communication, clinical judgment, and multitasking skills.
  • Comfort with EMR systems and general office technology
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to float between locations as required

Functional Demands & Physical Requirements:

  • Must exert up to 20 lbs occasionally, and up to 10 lbs frequently.
  • Frequent reaching, grasping, and handling of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to respond quickly in clinical or emergency situations
