Job Summary:

The Manager of Behavioral Health is a valued member of the Heywood Nursing leadership team and in collaboration with the Director and Practice Leader of the Behavioral Health Units leads day to day successful operations of the Mental Health Unit and assists with the Geriatric Psychiatric Unit, and Partial Behavioral Program. The responsibilities include and are not limited to: staffing schedule oversight, staff education, evaluations, adherence to regulatory requirements; assurance of appropriate milieu, patient intake, and other duties as assigned and identified by the Director. This position reports directly to the Director of the Behavioral Health.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Provides coaching and education for staff so that they can meet/exceed performance expectations.
  • Designs and implements individual and group plans which develop and motivate employees.
  • Ensures that employee skills match job requirements.
  • Completes employee performance evaluations by evaluation due dates.
  • Oversees daily operations to meet vision of providing service to the community.
  • Improves patient and/or customer satisfaction.
  • Responds to customer requests and concerns in a timely and effective manner.
  • Meets/exceeds customer expectations so that the customers select and recommend Heywood Hospital as their primary source of healthcare.
  • In collaboration with the Director utilizes customer satisfaction data to develop and anticipate customer service systems.
  • Staffing patterns and work flow design match customer requirements.
  • Manages resources to ensure adequate resources and future growth.
  • In collaboration with the Director, justifies budget variances.
  • Reduces costs and/or increases revenues.
  • Works collaboratively with the leadership team on staffing the department(s) adequately and adjusts staffing appropriately to provide wise stewardship 
  • Collaborates/coordinates projects/activities with other departments, teams, and task forces to build a team approach to healthcare delivery.
  • Participates on PI teams and committees as needed, etc.
  • Leads unit based projects.
  • Manages clinical practice and patient care delivery.
  • Develops mechanisms to assess response to nursing care from patients and families; consults with patients/families as necessary.
  • Validates that care provided to patients is consistent with identified medical regimens, and is responsive to patient and family expectations.
  • Works collaboratively to assess, admit, and discharge patients appropriately. 
  • Ensures compliance with professional standards.
  • In collaboration with the Director assumes accountability for remaining current regarding standards of care established by the profession, research findings, regulatory bodies, and government, and is able to determine, translate, and implement relevant implications for specific unit(s) of responsibility.
  • Ensures that nursing practice is consistent with current standards, regulations, and government standards of care.
  • Fosters interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to patient care.
  • Ensures that patient care regimens are coordinated interdependently with all members of the health care team.
  • Encourages and participates in joint planning and program development with all health care team members to improve patient care and meet changing patient care needs.
  • Participates in strategic planning for patient care services.
  • Ensures that staff input from the unit(s) is secured and considered by the nurse executive in hospital-wide strategic planning activities.
  • Participates in nursing strategic planning activities of the patient care services division and collaborates with the Director around accountability for developing a strategic plan for the unit(s) that supports the division and hospital plan.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with referral agencies, community services, and managed care companies.
  • Collaborates with the Director on managed care contracting process/updates
  • Collaborates with the Director, Utilization review team, and finance to review certifying agencies, justifying care delivery methodology and responds to suggestion/deficiencies.

Functional Demands

Physical requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  Frequently reaches (extending hands and arms in any direction), and handles (seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or working with hands).

Job Requirements

Minimum Education:

  • Associates degree in nursing required or Bachelor’s degree preferred.  

Minimum Work Experience:

  • Three to five years of behavioral health and DMH experience preferred and is required for the Associate degree applicants.
  • Three to five years progressive clinical and administrative experience required.  

Required Licenses and certifications:

  • Active Massachusetts R.N. licensure required.
  • CPR certified.
