Heywood Healthcare, a community-focused healthcare organization dedicated to meeting the needs of North Central Massachusetts, is searching for an exceptional Chief Development Officer (CDO) to join its
executive team. Reporting directly to the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the CDO is an executive leader responsible for developing and implementing fundraising strategies to support
Heywood’s vision, community awareness and financial sustainability. The CPO will design and lead a comprehensive philanthropic, marketing and community relations program to support the system’s
ambitious mission to be our region’s first choice for quality, compassionate patient-centered care. With a focus on building a culture of philanthropy and community investment, this leader will develop and
foster relationships with individuals, foundations and corporations capable of making donations and investments in our organization and the community commitments we support.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

 

  • Develop and lead a strategic, forward-thinking philanthropic program that aligns with Heywood Hospitals mission to be our region’s first choice for quality, compassionate, patient-centered
    care.
  • Work collaboratively with the CEO, hospital leadership, the Board of Trustees, and community partners to design and implement robust fundraising strategies.
  • Cultivate and maintain long-term relationships with donors, including individuals, corporations, and foundations, with a focus on securing transformational gifts.
  • Oversee all aspects of fundraising, including annual giving campaigns, major gifts, planned giving, grants, and special events.
  • Develop and implement donor campaigns and signature events that build awareness and generate significant contributions.
  • Identify new opportunities to strengthen donor pipelines and boost community engagement.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of major donors and prospects, serving as a hands-on fundraiser who leads by example.
  • Aligned with Heywood’s vision to improve the lives of our diverse communities by providing accessible, affordable, and culturally-sensitive care, the CPO will lead the team responsible for
    researching, writing, and managing grant proposals and programs to secure funding from foundations and other grant-making organizations.
  • Provide mentorship and strategic guidance to the philanthropy, marketing and grant supported teams, fostering a collaborative and results-oriented culture.
  • Oversee the Marketing and Communications function, ensuring a cohesive brand strategy and clear, consistent messaging across all channels (web, social, digital, print, and onsite).
  • Direct public relations, media outreach, and crisis communications, serving as a strategic advisor and partner to executive leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned

Standard Executive Management Level Responsibilities:

 

  • Oversee and evaluate department staff, offering consistent feedback, performance assessments, and professional development opportunities.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring that financial and operational objectives are achieved.
  • Address technical, operational, and personnel challenges to maintain a high-functioning team.
  • Ensure fundraising and grant management practices comply with legal and regulatory standards while upholding Heywood Hospital’s ethical values.
  • Demonstrate commitment to quality improvement by supporting and initiating performance enhancements in philanthropy operations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in philanthropic development, preferably in a healthcare or nonprofit setting.
  • Proven success in planning and executing strategic fundraising initiatives, including building and sustaining donor relationships and leading impactful events.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities, demonstrating success in meeting deadlines and handling multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a community-focused healthcare environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required. Master’s degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the North Central Massachusetts region and a deep appreciation for community-centered healthcare.
  • Existing networks within the philanthropic community, including individuals, corporations, and foundation leaders.
